Taxi Geneva – Crans-Montana

The drive splits in two, and the second half is the one that matters. The first hour and a half is motorway: out of the airport, along the north shore of Lake Geneva past Lausanne and Montreux, then into the Rhône valley on the A9 as far as Sierre. Flat, fast, unremarkable — and where most of the 184 km are covered.

From Sierre the road turns uphill and climbs roughly a thousand metres in a series of hairpins to reach the plateau. That final stretch takes about twenty-five minutes in good conditions and longer in snow. It is why the transfer runs to 2 h 20 rather than the 1 h 50 the distance alone would suggest, and why the duration quoted here already includes it.

A train reaches Sierre, and the SMC funicular climbs from there to Montana in 13 minutes, every 20 minutes from 6am to 10.40pm. It works if you travel light and the timetable matches your landing. With skis, small children or a delayed flight, it becomes two changes and a wait — which is the whole argument for a direct transfer, not a claim that the train is bad.

The name reads as one place and behaves as three. Crans sits at the western end, around the golf course and the shopping streets. Montana is the middle, with the funicular station and the lake. Aminona lies further east, quieter and further from the main lifts. Several kilometres separate the ends of the plateau.

Arriving at "Crans-Montana" and being set down at the wrong end is a twenty-minute walk with luggage that nobody planned for. Give the full address when you book — the chalet, the residence, the hotel, or the lift station you are heading for — and the driver takes you there rather than to a central point.

If you are staying in a rented apartment and have only the owner's arrival instructions, send those too. Access to some residences is easier from one side of the plateau than the other, and the driver would rather know before the last hairpin than after it.

The same applies in reverse. A pickup is booked from the exact address where you and the luggage will be standing, not from the village name.

CHF 720 per vehicle for a saloon carrying up to three passengers, CHF 865 for a van up to seven. Per vehicle, not per person: three people pay what one pays.

The fare is agreed before departure and does not move afterwards — not for traffic on the A9, not for the hour you land, not for a Sunday, not for how long the climb takes in fresh snow. A return is booked in the same request, with both legs confirmed at once.

Equipment decides the vehicle, not passenger count. A saloon takes three people and their ordinary luggage; add three ski bags and three boot bags and it does not. Give the number of skis or boards when you ask for the price, and the right vehicle is quoted from the start rather than discovered on the forecourt.

A van carries up to seven passengers with their equipment, and is the sensible choice for a family with a pushchair or anyone with a snowboard bag, which is bulkier than it looks. Capacities and use cases are set out on the vans and groups page.

Pushchairs travel in the boot. Mention one with the rest of the luggage rather than on the day.

The plateau road is a mountain road and the Valais gets real snow. Our vehicles run winter tyres through the season and carry chains. What changes in winter is not whether the transfer runs — it runs — but the margin around it.

In heavy snowfall the climb is slower and occasionally held while a plough passes. If your flight lands at 18:00 on a Saturday in February, the drive is planned accordingly. Book against your flight number rather than a clock time and the departure follows the actual landing.

Airport pickups are tracked against the flight. A two-hour delay moves the pickup; it does not cost you the ride and it does not change the fare. That matters more here than on a city transfer — miss the last connection into the Valais at 23:00 and the alternatives are thin.

On the way back, give the departure time rather than the time you would like to leave the resort. We work backwards from it: about two hours at Geneva Airport for an international flight, 1 h 30 for a European one, plus the descent and the motorway.

One vehicle chosen around the whole party is simpler than two chosen around passenger numbers. A van keeps a family or a group together from the arrivals hall to the door of the chalet, which matters most with children at the end of a travel day.

Child seats are CHF 30 per seat per journey, requested at booking and fitted before the car leaves. Infant carrier, car seat or booster according to age — the child seats page explains which suits which. Travelling without your own seats is usually the point of asking.

A private transfer is not the only way to the plateau and it is not always the right one. Train to Sierre then the funicular — a 13-minute climb — suits light luggage and a timetable that matches your landing. A shared shuttle costs less per person and more in time: it waits for a full vehicle and drops other parties before yours. A hire car gives you freedom on the plateau and hands you a mountain road in winter, with the tyres and chains that go with it.

What a private transfer buys is one thing — the airport door to your door, at a price fixed in advance, whatever time you land. For two people travelling light on a weekday, the train is a reasonable choice. For a family with equipment arriving on a Saturday in February, it is not close. Saturdays in the winter season are transfer day across the Alps, and they are the days when vehicles run out. Arriving on a Saturday between Christmas and early March, book as soon as the flights are confirmed rather than in the final week.

The plateau also fills outside the ski season: the Omega European Masters brings a golf crowd in early September — 3 to 6 September in 2026 — and the Caprices Festival takes two April weekends, 10-12 and 17-19 in 2026. Both are worth booking early for the same reason.
